Installation of Ubuntu 8.04

Here is how I installed Ubuntu on my machine.

  • First do a usual installation of Ubuntu.
  • Set up VPN as described on this blog
  • Set up Printer as described on this blog.
  • Install latex, emacs and friends

    sudo apt-get install auctex texlive-latex-extra texlive-fonts-extra texlive-latex-recommended texlive-fonts-recommended

  • Install mew, an email handler for emacs

    sudo apt-get install mew stunnel4

Now some essential components are installed. Next you need to decide how you want to access files on the central university server. One way is to create a directory called let’s say alf, install the sshfs program

sudo apt-get install sshfs

and then to mount your files in the alf folder via the command

sshfs alf

(Students might have to access another server. I will investigate this.)
Another possibility is to download everything you want to work with to the local machine and work locally. The drawback is that you have to keep track of versions of files. This can be automatized using the rsync command via batch scripts. Please take contact with us if you want more details and/or script files.
